Robyn Lloyd won the International Speaker and the Speech Evaluation. A huge congratulations to Robyn from us all, well done, terrific effort! Robyn now goes forward to the Area competition on the 17th March, venue to be decided, competing against the winners from Riverside, Terrace and Young Guns Clubs. Everyone is more that welcome to attend and cheer on Robyn on the night. More details to follow as venue is confirmed. This competition will be hosted by Young Guns.

Thank you to all the members who participated in the competition(some at the last minute!) including, Robyn Lloyd, Robyn Bell, Gil Alexander and Robert Twomey. Big thanks to the members who helped with various roles including Allen and Jerry as Timekeepers, Eder as Usher, Tapuwa as Contest Chair and Tony as Chief Tally Counter & Area Governor to present the Places! Fantastic effort all around!

Club competitions seem to be more relaxing and fun with an opportunity to participate and step up to the plate amongst friends. I always leave with some learning for the next time. Keep it in mind when the Humerous Speech and Table Topics come up later in the year………..You will never know if you never go!!

All the Best

Each club in Toastmasters pursues a set of objectives called the Distinguished Club Program. This program involves ten objectives that measure the club’s success against membership numbers, educational awards and operational targets.

For the past six years, Durack has achieved the highest possible club award, the President’s Distinguished Award. Once again for the 2008/2009 year, Durack has succeeded in reaching this target again.

Congratulations to the club officers and members who have assisted in making this happen. Durack remains one of the most successful clubs in Western Australia and as members we are very proud to be part of it.

Last night (Tuesday 16 September) Durack hosting the Area i40 Contest Finals. The top speakers from Durack, Young Guns, Riverside and Terrace competed in Humorous and Table Topics contests. There was a very good turn out, which was rewarded by some excellent speeches and good food!

The winner of the humorous speech contest was Michael Chin from Riverside Toastmasters. Michael delivered a speech entitled “Tall Poppies: Why we don’t need them”. He told us why tall poppies are a bad thing, making the rest of us feel inadequate, and also how to spot them and bring them down. It was a well constructed and very well presented speech, which received a lot laughs.

The runner up was Durack’s Glen Lewis, telling us about his new business “Fitness 2nd”, which would only employ old, fat, dumb people, since they would prove cheaper. It was a little incorrect (!) but very funny.

Durack’s Mary Murphy picked up first place in the impromptu speaking (table topics) contest. The challenge for each contestant was to tell us what the priorities should be for the new WA state government. Mary picked education and spoke passionately about the topic, reflecting on her own education and where she saw room for improvement in WA.

Congratulations to everyone who competed and thank you to all the people who worked hard to make the evening possible.

The winners from these contests now proceed to the division finals on Monday 27 October. This will commence at 6.30pm in the Central Park theatrette. Please come along to cheer on our representatives.

The membership of Durack Toastmasters today set the challenge to beat Victoria Quay Toastmasters and be the first club in the District to achieve distinguished status in the coming year.

Each year, Toastmasters International awards clubs that have performed well in the year starting from the 1st of July. The club members need to achieve their educational awards, new members have to be attracted, and the administrative duties of the club need to be performed. For the past five years straight, Durack has achieved the highest possible award award, the President’s Distinguished Club. This has also been achieved by Victoria Quay and the two clubs are nearly always the first to achieve it for the district, which includes Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

“We have a great deal of respect for the Victoria Quay club,” said Durack President Michael Malone. “But Durack is that little bit better. So in the coming year, we’re going to prove it by taking the flag again.”

The race is on.
